Someone in the congressional office of Rep. Angie Craig is having fun with acronyms.
On Wednesday, the Minnesota Democrat unveiled a bill taking aim at House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) as the federal government nears a shutdown at the end of the month. Party in-fighting has left the Republican leader struggling to pass a spending plan to fund government services.
Craigs bill would block members of Congress from receiving their scheduled pay if the government shuts down and federal workers are furloughed. She is calling the legislation the My Constituents Cannot Afford Rebellious Tantrums, Handle Your Shutdown Act, or the MCCARTHY Shutdown Act for short.
The Democrat said her tribute to the House speaker, if passed, would make sure lawmakers experience the same lost paychecks as regular Americans.

(23,365 posts)I saw a video of a guy walking down the street with dollar bills taped on his clothes and offering them to anyone. The poor people, even some homeless if I remember only took 1 or 2 dollars. Then this woman dressed to the nines walked up and started pulling off all of them and someone asked her why and she said she needed a manicure.

The No Pay for Congress During Default or Shutdown Act, shared in advance with NBC News, would withhold lawmakers' pay for the duration of a debt limit breach or a lapse in federal funding, an attempt to motivate legislators to prevent either situation.
Fears are growing that the divided Congress may not meet the June 1 deadline set by the Treasury Department to raise the debt limit or risk a catastrophic default on U.S. obligations. The proposal, from two politically vulnerable members in competitive districts, represents a populist move to channel voter anger toward Congress, which is strong among both parties bases.
"If Congress cant fulfill basic obligations tied to the strength and security of our country, lawmakers should not be rewarded with our salaries until we do our jobs," Spanberger said.

(10,395 posts)Under the Affordable Care Act, members of the U.S. House of Representatives, the Senate and their office staffs who want employer coverage generally have to buy it on the health insurance exchange. Before the ACA passed in 2010, they were eligible to be covered under the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program.

(21,777 posts)If federal employees don't get paid because of Republican House shenanigans, why should the House get paid?
The only drawback is that it would apply to all members of Congress, not just House Republiclowns. But sometimes desperate measures are called for.
