NY-AD27: Democrats seek to hold seat in low-turn out race Republicans could take

Sam Berger says he’s got the Democratic establishment and union support to win a low turnout special election for state Assembly in eastern Queens — keeping the seat for the Democratic Party.

“We’re definitely very labor strong, union strong, there’s been a lot of support in the Orthodox Jewish community,” Berger said while rallying with volunteers from the building workers’ union, 32BJ.

But Berger, a 25-year-old law school graduate who is an Orthodox Jew, acknowledges the Democratic brand has been weakened — particularly over migrant shelters and criminal justice reforms.

They’re among the top issues he says his community cares about.

“I think there has been a lot of discontent. There’s a lot there we can do to fix that, to make changes,” Berger said.
