As Jim Jordan tries to inserts his committee improperly into state prosecutions once again, a reminder of why he is even in Congress in the first place. This is his district in Ohio. One of the most gerrymandered in the nation.

I have heard that districts can be drawn more fairly by data science.

(132,448 posts)what dirty secrets he has on some people. It has puzzled me for a very long time that soomebody so corrupt, so evil, so disgusting, could continue in office. (note: that thougt preceded the moron twins gazpacho and qbert, and santos.))? But I still think he has dirt on some very powerful people. Or putler does.

Court threw it out 5 times. Ony good for 4 years, just enough to get them re- elected.
We voted for an independent commission twice. DeWine put himself in charge. The corruption is so bad they are doing it in plain sight now. They know their days are numbered. Like rats they are scrabbling. We voted against their attempt to make it impossible for citizens to file to get things on the ballot. Even the rural voted against them this time.

(1,022 posts)Apparently, if you want a member of congress that abets serial rapists and insurrectionists this creep fits the bill perfectly.
He would not know what integrity was if it bit him on the ass.
I'm just glad his district doesn't go far enough south to have him be my congressman.

(26,257 posts)questioned. I still think that the next shoe that should drop is to go after all of the members of Congress that stood by and did nothing, in effect aided and abetted tRUMP in his attempt.

But he never forgets that his constituents are even stupider than he is. THAT is why he is in Congress.

(3,782 posts)The borders of a district must be straight lines, and there can't be more than twelve of them. That gives a little wiggle room but not for the kind of fuckery that was obviously done here.
onecaliberal
(36,594 posts)Literally divide the state equally by #s of people and straight lined districts.
FakeNoose
(41,637 posts)Each district is supposed to be roughly the same number of residents - including nonvoters. So the urban districts are smaller areas than the rural districts because the population density is greater.
However the Repukes have learned that urban areas tend to elect more minorities as representatives. They don't like that - so they use gerrymandering to break up the urban areas and combine them with suburban/rural areas that have more white voters. I'm sure you get the drift.
Gerrymandering is the perfect example of incumbents (of either party) putting their thumb on the scale to make their own reelection easier. Since the 1950s it has been mostly Repukes doing it, but before that some Dems were doing it too.
It's immoral and undemocratic, but it's also harder for the minority party to oppose the gerrymandered maps. The longer it takes to get them struck down, the bigger the advantage for the majority party in the next election.

(22,218 posts)and let control of Congress fall where it may. I'd bet dollars to donuts the Dems dominate.
Also, there's no reason we're stuck at 435 Congress critters since 1911. The UK has 650 MPs with a population roughly 20% of the US.

(60,320 posts)By your math, you want over 3,000 members. That's unwieldy, impossible to manage.

(22,218 posts)I just think the population of our congressional districts has grown too large for congress people to provide the kind of representation the founders intended. They're more like senators now. My comparison was just to show that other democracies do just fine with significantly larger representative bodies, i.e. 435 is not a magic number above which there's chaos. 600 would do. The Bundestag in Germany has over 700.

(40,970 posts)This is not directed at you, but at the media. I'm having serious issue with the way the term AI is thrown around for what so far are just complex algorithms. A few weeks ago I read some supposed experts in AI stated that AI is the most serious threat facing humanity. Really? More serious than climate change? You watch. We'll put more effort into trying to control/monitor/safeguard ourselves from AI than we ever do for climate change.
Again, none of that was personal Just ranting at reality.
