Wisconsin billionaires quietly bankroll effort to shrink state's social safety net

Republican lawmakers held a day of back-to-back public hearings in mid-April for bills that would add restrictions to receiving unemployment insurance payouts, ban local guaranteed income programs and prevent state agencies from automatically renewing low-income health insurance.

A lead proponent testifying at the Capitol was a former Republican legislative aide representing a Florida-based advocacy group with no membership and tens of millions of anonymous donations. One Republican lawmaker noted it was the third time that afternoon that Adam Gibbs had spoken in favor of the bills, all which were aimed at dismantling the state’s social safety net.

“Busy day in the Legislature,” replied Gibbs, communications director for the nonprofit Foundation for Government Accountability.

His pitch that April afternoon was succinct: Wisconsin employers struggle to fill jobs because the state’s unemployment insurance benefits — which are among the bottom third of benefits in the nation — are too generous.

“One of the fastest ways that we can deal with Wisconsin’s ongoing workforce shortage is to keep people who are still in the labor market, those recently unemployed, productively engaged in the workforce,” Gibbs told members of the Assembly Committee on Workforce Development and Economic Opportunities.

Funny how the "billionaires" are never mentioned by name. It only mentions a few lobbyists and right-wing non-profits that are pushing this legislation. I doubt very much that there's anything "bi-partisan" about this.

There is definitely an urban vs rural thing in Wisconsin.

I think it's rather more important than the candiates. If you identify with rural Wisconsin, you're an enemy of people in urban areas.
If you identify with urban areas you are going to lean into being an opponent of people in rural areas.

I get this. Wisconsin is one of the states with the highest proportion of rural landscape out of it's total footprint.

If Dems identified with rural people, most of them would be Dem. But WIDems don't do that.

Most probably spend their winters in SW Florida. Apologies to FL Democrats for exporting our shitheads for half the year.

that's not a description of most people living in rural Wisconsin.

That's not to say no people with money live in rural WI, but mostly it's true.

Rural folks in WI moslty like having 4 seasons, and most of them find ways thru winter... that could depend on staying in central heating (which is mostly what I do) and warm drinks, and it might include cross-country skiing, ice skating, curling, ice fishing and snow-mobiling, not necessarily in that order. People with kids attend their kids sports, in centrally heated gyms.
