An Inside Job
A dam in Ukraine was designed to withstand almost any attack imaginable from the outside. The evidence suggests Russia blew it up from within.

Even in a war that has razed entire cities, the destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric dam in southern Ukraine stands out.
Thousands of people were displaced by flooding from one of the worlds largest reservoirs, which was vital for irrigating farmland considered the breadbasket of Europe. The disaster puts global food supplies for millions at risk and could threaten fragile ecosystems for decades.
The dam was visibly scarred by fighting in the months before the breach. Ukrainian strikes had damaged one part of the roadway over the dam, and retreating Russian troops later blew up another. Last month, satellite images showed water flowing uncontrolled over some of the gates.
This has led to suggestions that the dam may have merely fallen victim to the accumulated damage, which Russia has seized on to deny responsibility.

Russia had means, motive and opportunity to destroy Ukraine dam, drone photos and information show
By MSTYSLAV CHERNOV and LORI HINNANT
BERISLAV, Ukraine (AP) Russia had the means, motive and opportunity to bring down a Ukrainian dam that collapsed earlier this month while under Russian control, according to exclusive drone photos and information obtained by The Associated Press.
Images taken from above the Kakhovka Dam and shared with the AP appear to show an explosive-laden car atop the structure, and two officials said Russian troops were stationed in a crucial area inside the dam where the Ukrainians say the explosion that destroyed it was centered. The Russian Defense Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The dams destruction led to deadly flooding, endangered crops in the worlds breadbasket, threatened drinking water supplies for thousands and unleashed an environmental catastrophe. Ukrainian commanders say it also scuppered some of their plans to take Russian positions in a counteroffensive that is now in its early stages.
Each side has accused the other of destroying the dam, but the various Russian allegations that it was hit by a missile or taken down by explosives fail to account for a blast so strong that it registered on seismic monitors in the region.

Russia raised water level behind it beforehand, to maximize damage. They planned & did it. . .nt

Well, maybe Russia shouldn't have illegally invaded a sovereign country,

Damn was visibly scarred by Ukrainian attacks on roadway on top? Didn't know that.

This title is
Pure propaganda & very disappointing. An insult to thinking people especially Ukrainians everywhere.
I'm not interested in reading anymore articles from sources that are so hard up for attention that they resort to click bait titles designed to appeal to the most base of societal impulses.
The New York Times is a rag. Barely suited for bird cage liner.

Where it says Russia did it?

(7,839 posts)4. Then Ukrainians should have stopped attacking it? If that's true.

IE: Ukraine.
You always fail to point that out.
Why is that?

(20,121 posts)7. The OP's article clearly explains why external damage didn't break the dam
Stop defending Putin.

War, what is it good for? Not truth.

An inside jobs refers to someone working inside a structure or institution who betrays it.
