Mont St.-Michel Turns 1000 - Celebrating with a painting.

Last edited Thu Jun 15, 2023, 06:09 AM - Edit history (1)

Exactly 1,000 years ago this month, construction started on a magnificent island building off the coast of France that, as it rose improbably from the choppy waters of the Atlantic Ocean, would become a lasting symbol of national fortitude.

The medieval abbey atop Mont Saint-Michel, a cascade of walls and buttresses descending from a lofty central spire, was a spectacular creation which has played crucial roles in French history over the centuries.

Today, as it marks a millennium since work began, it’s one of the country’s most popular tourist attractions outside of Paris – at times overwhelmed by its own popularity to such a degree that its custodians have urged people to stay away.

The abbey, which lies off the coast of France’s Normandy region, west of Paris, has pulled in legions of pilgrims over the centuries. Today, it attracts 1.3 million tourists each year.

I see a bit of his whimsy and lightness/delicacy in your lovely take on MSM.

The castle in my back yard turned 1000 some 50 years ago, although the date is fluid. There is still a cornerstone with the year construction was started (973). References to a wooden fortress date back as far as the 9th century, and the two stone towers are first noted in the year 1276.

It's not as spectacular as MSM, and it is (mercifully) not as heavily visited, although tourist busses do clog our neighborhood in the summer months.

It has been attacked, partially destroyed and rebuilt numerous times over the course of history. It is nowhere as grandiose as many other castles, but it IS the only 1000 year old castle in my back yard, so there is some sentimental value involved:

My job usually takes me to a different country every day. I savor everything in small doses. At least it’s not boring!

By the way, if you want interesting, just south of us is the valley of a small stream where a major archaeological find was made almost 200 years ago. It changed anthropology, and there is s major museum on the site now. The stream is called the Neander, and the valley (“tal” in German) is thus the Neandertal, sometimes spelled with an H in older versions.
