Protesters call for arrest of white woman who fatally shot Black neighbor

OCALA, Fla. (AP) — Authorities came under pressure Tuesday to arrest and charge a white woman who fired through her front her door and killed a Black neighbor in a case that has put Florida’s divisive stand your ground law back into the spotlight.

About three dozen mostly Black protesters gathered outside the Marion County Judicial Center to demand that the shooter be arrested in the country’s latest flashpoint over race and gun violence. The chief prosecutor, State Attorney William Gladson, met with the protesters and urged patience while the investigation continues.

“If we are going to make a case we need as much time and as much evidence as possible,” Gladson said. “I don’t want to compromise any criminal investigation and I’m not going to do that.”

Ajike Owens, a 35-year-old mother of four, was killed in the Friday night shooting that Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods said was the culmination of a 2½-year feud between neighbors. The women lived in the rolling hills south of Ocala, a north Florida city that is the heart of the state’s horse country.

Basically terrorized those children for a very long time. She has been reported to the police on multiple occasions. The killer is being protected because her skin is white.
On edit: Joy asked the neighbor if the police have interviewed her. The police have not interviewed or talked to her.

She was an innocent victim shot THROUGH A CLOSED DOOR - shot TO DEATH, capping more than two years of difficulty between the shooter and herself.

Okay. True enough - we don’t all get along, and maybe it’s not possible. So have your arguments. Call each other nasty names. But add a gun????????? What the hell do you think would happen?!?!?!?

I swear, if I could (and I’ve said this here before), I would take ALL the guns. ALL of them. I don’t care what size. I don’t care what make or model. I don’t care what caliber. I don’t care if they’re brand new or antique. I don’t care how they were acquired or bought or gifted or inherited.

If it were up to me, they’d ALL be gone. I lost two friends to an argument that got out of control and ended tragically because there was a gun in the house within east reach.

This is personal with me. And I’ve said all this here, before. But it shouldn’t just slip down into the memory hole. People shouldn’t forget. And I bet numerous DUers have a personal story about how they lost someone they cared about - because a gun was conveniently close by. And EVERYBODY should care! Seems to me there needs to be a Great Reminding every so often. So nobody forgets or starts becoming blasé about it - or stops caring.

I don’t want ANYBODY ELSE here to know that pain. But I fear that inevitably, somebody else here will lose someone dear - to guns. Or they know somebody who has. And I think we have to keep on active mode on this issue as long as others ignore it or wave us off or close their ears or their hearts.

I still hurt a little every day. And these were just friends. I can’t even imagine how it feels to lose a spouse, a child, a sibling, a parent, or a lover to guns. It’s bad enough when you “just” lose a friend or two.
