is within the deductible of the insurance policy? Or the amount of damages was only slightly above the deductible; therefore, filing a claim for damages would be offset by premium increases in following years?

Without additional information I'm not willing to arrive at the same conclusion as you did suggesting a nefarious motive despite how I personally feel about TFG.
