1. Seems like we did forget for a long time

Lived my entire life without ever hearing of this until the last few years.

The death and destruction was staggering. Over 1250 homes and buildings burnt down. Estimates of the dead range from 75 to 300+.

We learned zero about it in school. Must have been too woke to talk about.

5. Had American History in high school

This was Catholic School in the 1980s, it wasn't until I was much older that I realized my teacher for that class was a Right Wing loon. We learned that slavery had little to do with the Civil War, that is was just to preserve the union. We learned zero about the Civil Rights movement. We learned very little about Native Americans, just that they were savages. And as a 15 or 16 year old, you don't really ask questions, especially if you're not even all that interested in the subject.

This is what Republicans want to go back to, a time when everything was white washed. A time when we didn't learn real history.

because I questioned and challenged everything. The nuns especially were most unhappy with me. So I got to live in the libraries, and read everything I wanted, and everybody left me alone. But back in the 50's and 60's, at least in my schools, there was dearth of non-whitewashed, non-patriarchal ( yes, I was challenging the patriarchy even back then!) information.

"So you're going to sit there and tell me that Gandhi is in hell? You serious? You're telling me the most graceful, kind, virtuous, and pious person around is in hell unless he accepted Jesus on his death bed? And the idea this man who was the embodiment of Hinduism on earth wasn;'t going to convert on his death bed."

Religion was revealed to me as a total house of cards as a sophomore in Catholic School. It all fell apart when they told me Gandhi was in Hell. Total fake bullshit after that. Been an atheist ever since and the more I've learned the more organized religion has been shown to be ridiculous and harmful fantasy.

And your post reminded me of a very old, very long, joke about an old Jewish man on his deathbed. The punchline was, "Whatttt? The Rabbi should come out on a night like this???"

They made sure a generation of southerners knew the truth from a young age. My mother was so furious she withdrew me to try to homeschool me into Mike Pence. Too late though.

It took an HBO super hero show, Watchmen, to expose most of the country to this event in our history.

Makes you wonder about what else has been covered up or was forgotten. Were there other similar massacres in other parts of the country people still don't know about?

Watching the 1619 Project I am learning that there were many other such massacres and land grabs from both the indigenous people and the descendants of the enslaved.
