Citing migrant influx, New York mayor asks court to suspend long-standing 'right to shelter'The right to shelter has been in place for more than four decades in New York, after a court in 1981 required the city to provide temporary housing for every homeless person who asks for it. Other big U.S. cities don't have such a rule.
But with the arrival of 70,000 asylum seekers since last spring, many of whom crossed into the U.S. from Mexico, the city has been challenged to find room for everyone in need of a temporary roof and bed.
It is in the best interest of everyone, including those seeking to come to the United States, to be upfront that New York City cannot single-handedly provide care to everyone crossing our border," Mayor Eric Adams said in a statement.
"Being dishonest about this will only result in our system collapsing, and we need our government partners to know the truth and do their share," said the mayor, a Democrat.

(11,738 posts)while I have them and put them on a bus back to Texas or Florida, back to whoever sent them.
Im not even mad that Gregg Abbott is busing them to other states, its just that hes doing this out of spite and for political points; its that this isnt an action to solve a legit problem, like we expect political leaders to do. Instead of being a mature adult with the full power of the state government behind him and coordinating with his fellow governors to take some migrants off of his hands, he dumps him in blue states and only blue states. Instead of trying to ease what may actually be legitimately overwhelming amount of migrants and calling on his governors to coordinate with him, he buses them past all of the red states that may have some capacity to take some migrants just drop them off in front of the White House.
For that reason, Id put them on a bus right back to Texas.
