New York MagazineEverything I laid out in the piece about DeSantiss plan has turned out to be correct, except one: I thought it would work.
It still might work, of course. But the de facto rollout of DeSantiss campaign, in advance of the de jure announcement, has undeniably failed. DeSantiss polling numbers, after rising smartly, went the wrong way. Crucially, the phalanx of party-elite support he was amassing has begun to crumble. Trump has won several endorsements from Republicans in Congress, and numerous presidential candidates have jumped into the race. DeSantiss early weakness has produced responses that have made him even weaker.
Theres no easy diagnosis for the stumbling rollout. As my story observed, DeSantis cuts an uninspiring figure on the stump, with his irritating nasal speaking voice and aversion to human contact. But mediocre orators (Harry Truman) and introverts (Richard Nixon) have won presidential elections before. And just last November, these drawbacks did not stop DeSantis from crushing an opponent who was neither unqualified nor ideologically extreme.

(10,882 posts)good judgment or that he's entertaining. On the other hand Trump is a talented entertainer and Rhonda Pudding Fingers will be the butt of all his cruel humor.

(11,767 posts)Trump is a pitchman. He is a narcissist and a con man. He wasn't selling anything tangible. He was selling himself and a White Supremacist vision of America that is increasingly popular with a small but very loud, and well funded base.
DeSantis actually tries to implement policy, but guess what? Conservative policy HURTS everyone except the wealthy, because all Conservatism is is a pyramid like structure to society like feudalism, except with White Wealthy Protestant Christian businessmen substituted for hereditary nobles. When you actually try to institute policies designed to control the masses and blatantly shift the wealth and power up to the top, people will eventually notice and not take too kindly to it.
He is not going to win the nomination for the GOP. He will also be terming out at the end of his current term. He may be able to run for Senate, but I have a feeling that his next statewide run will not go as well as his last governor's race.
