Why border crossings have fallen since Trump-era rules expired last week

LA Times
Fewer migrants are crossing the southern border of the U.S., and the doomsday scenarios that many politicians feared would follow the expiration of the pandemic-era restrictions known as Title 42 have not materialized.

The reasons for the decline in border crossings are still unclear — and the trend still in its infancy — but interviews with migrants offer some possible explanations.
Many U.S.-bound asylum seekers, aware of the risks of entering the country after the end of Title 42 — including the threats of deportation, a five-year ban on reentering and even criminal prosecution — are playing a waiting game in Mexican border cities.

Cleven Ismael Peraza, a 26-year-old Venezuelan, is among those who hope to enter the U.S. One of more than 3,000 migrants camped out along the Rio Grande in Matamoros, Mexico, he said he had been turned back after crossing while Title 42 was in place.

1. I have NO idea what to do with immigration..

But I do know that they will come.
Right now, they risk their lives, the lives of their children.. everything... to get away from something. Poverty, the cartels, political violence... whatever.
They will come.
Climate disruptions will only make immigrants more desperate.
As I say... I have no idea what to do, but minds far more clever than mine had better get started on a Plan.

I've actually read that kind of shit posted on Facebook and on the mainstream rightwing sites.

I actually do have a Plan. Bomb their home countries with money, food, and medical supplies. Relentless bombing. Shock and awe.
It might actually cheaper than some of the harebrained ideas floating around.... and more humane.

6. Just imagine if South America were as prosperous as Europe?

I'm sure someone could tell me why that's not even possible, but it would still seem like that would be a valid foreign policy goal. People tend to prosper when their neighbors prosper. I think the US would be in much better shape if our southern neighbors were in better shape. Previous foreign policies created a significant amount of the mess, so it seems like trying to do the opposite would be reasonable. It could benefit everyone.

It has had some deleterious effects, perhaps.

But rather that if the region were prosperous and politically stable, then things would be better all the way around, and better for us. Of course there are pretty solid limits to what foreign policy can do, but a significant amount of US foreign policy there in the past had the opposite effect, and was more about extracting wealth and resources for our own benefit, a version of colonialism. It could be done differently. Which would start with a long-term vision, I think.

The Biden administration and all the other federal administrations before his are responsible for controlling the southern border and controlling immigration. It is no more fair to blame Texas for the number of people surging over the border or not, than it is to blame Delaware.

If the Biden administration wants to do something about the number of people crossing or not, the ball is in their court. This is not Texas's burden to carry, any more than it is Vermont's, or Hawaii's.

I live in Texas. Did I say **ck Texas? Because what I really meant to say was **ck Texas.

Second of all, Congress passes immigration laws. The Biden administration has a limited arsenal when it comes to immigration and in fact their plan introduces new options to the process.

Third of all, **ck Cornyn and Rafael Cruz.

8. The Biden admin is doing a few things about this

They are investing in the "northern triangle countries" (El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras).
They are setting up centers where immigrants can go to apply for asylum in Central America so migrants don't have to make the trip to the US border.
They have an app migrants can use to start the process to apply for asylum etc.

That's just a few of the little talked about things they're doing that I've read about.

That involves a smartphone.. right?
Can every deserving migrant own a smartphone?
I know Biden is facing a tsunami of immigrants, and I know the nothing he does will be without problems, but all the hungry, desperate people in the world don't have drinking water, let alone phones.

Biden has experts, people who earnestly want to solve probems without grandstanding. We need a way to orderly and legally process people trying to enter the US without causing chaos and without harming our society. More than anything, Trump dismantled the immigration system, he broke it because his aim was to destroy the legal avenues for people to come here.

We are a nation of immigrants, we need to have amway for people to come here without breaking the law.
