BREAKING: The Iowa Senate passed a child labor law before dawn today.

The bill lets 14-year-olds work 6-hour night shifts, 15-year-olds work on assembly lines, and 16- and 17-year-olds serve alcohol.

The Senate went through the night, and voted on child labor at 4:52 a.m.

Now the bill moves to the Iowa House.

We recently investigated this bill, and uncovered that it began in the office of Gov. Kim Reynolds and was written by top corporate lobbyists led by the restaurant association.

4. It could end well. I was capable of it at my 1st restaurant job when I was 17.

It's only a glass of liquid. You're not supposed to drink customer's Iced Teas, either.

I surmise that, since they're not included in the bill's ages, 18 to 20 year olds can already serve alcohol in Iowa. They can't legally drink.

Will kids get access to alcohol? No doubt. If they're working in a restaurant that serves it, they already have access.

16. I agree. I think the drinking age should be lowered to at least 18.

If you can vote, serve in the military, enter into a contract, etc, you should be able to drink, smoke and if it's legal in your state, smoke pot.

BTW, the fake IDs the 18-20 year olds have are crazy good. So they are doing all this anyway.

They do those as well. Might as well change the age of adulthood to 16 so they can at least vote as well.

13. And that's why lots of restaurants want 21 y/o servers.

9. So a 16 yo can serve alcohol at a bar? How about an adult dance club?

Conservative family values: exploiting teens, encouraging making minimum wage plus tips for pleasing inebriated adults.

And watch the same GOP gasp as fewer students meet academic standards, much less actually graduate from high school.

adults. These jobs require workers to get a housing, food, and transportation subsidy. Children are more likely to have this subsidy.

14. Child labor laws were not about protecting children.

They were about protecting labor. The push by the GQP to increase the hours/places children can work is their response to a tight labor market. So much for free market capitalism.

all this attention and help. I keep hearing that the white working class votes Republican because the Democratic Party are elites who "ignore" them. No wonder they keep voting for Republicans! It'll be just "Huckleberry Finn."
