(23,367 posts)up his lawyers and staff to talk about all of it the day before?
From PBS: "Pence spent hours huddling with staff, including his general counsel, Greg Jacob. He studied the Electoral Count Act of 1887, which governs the proceedings, and met with the Senate parliamentarian to understand his role. He also received outside counsel, including from former Vice President Dan Quayle."
Those are not the actions of someone who had already made up his mind. It looks like he was trying to find a way to stop the certification legally but he couldn't because it is not legal or constitutional

(34,479 posts)These are the same people who tried to kill him, and he can't have himself looking like he wants to help take out Dear Leader. Ultimately, I believe he will give up his subpoena fight, but not without a "They're making me do it" act. He wants Trump gone as much as everyone else, but it's not in his interest to let Trump's fan club know that.

(8,669 posts)Trump would have declared martial law thereby stopping the transfer of power...a dead Mike Pence was worth more to Trump than a live one...and if Pence had even the hint of a spine, he would honor the subpoena...
GoCubsGo
(34,479 posts)I think he just wants the appearance that he's being forced into it. Pence is still worth more to Trump dead now, as he was then, but only because his testimony could help put Trump away. Yes, he absolutely is spineless, in this case it's somewhat understandable. Not that I have any sympathy for him.
agingdem
(8,669 posts)Pence knew exactly the vicious revenge-fueled hell Trump would rain down on him if he didn't obey Trump's command...when (?) he testifies I suspect DOJ lawyers will concentrate their questions on the weeks leading up to January 6...what did he know and when did he know it...

(46,132 posts)Thats his only concern. When he is forced to testify by courts, then he can claim to the MAGA base he didnt want to.
He already wrote about Trump pressuring him in his book. I think maybe he assumes hard core MAGA doesnt read books?

(20,338 posts)They can engage in any illegal, immoral, egregious activities and behavior, ask for forgiveness and start all over. Perhaps thats true, and a just God allows it. But one has to ask oneself, if the God they claim to follow would actually allow such duplicitous behavior, exactly how does that constitute a just God?

(48,118 posts)Mike, you have no flexibility on this. None. Zero. Forget it. Put it away, Quayle told him.
Pence pressed again.
You dont know the position Im in, he said, according to the authors.
I do know the position youre in, Quayle responded. I also know what the law is. You listen to the parliamentarian. Thats all you do. You have no power.

(1,791 posts)No body who knew about the plot and said nothing should be a part of our government. There are Senators and Congressmen who this applies to as well. I would like my Senator, Steve Daines, to be asked those same questions. He was all set to challenge the vote until the coup failed.

(21,621 posts)What was there 139 R Reps & 8 R Senators who knew about attempting to overturn the election? Well that's
the number who voted against certifying the votes, so there was probably some who didn't want to stick
their neck out for a lie. All elected Rs were more than likely aware what Тяцмp was attempting to do, and
just like the Occupy Democrat's Meme states "He didn't call the FBI" neither did any other Rs that I'm aware of.
My Sen. Roger Marshall was one of the 8.

There must be at least that many Republicans who will jump at this. Pence and others can just be told they might need this since its about as valuable as their version of the gospel.

(1,222 posts)Many reasons for Pence to fight the subpoena like appeasing the base for his deluded presidential ambitions, the GOP just wants Jan6 to fade away.
