(14,689 posts)This could be a high altitude jamming balloon shaped to have a more controlled course in the jet stream and possibly cause havoc with radio or GPS signals.

then again, with solar collectors all sorts of things are possible

(5,925 posts)without the propellers and rudder supposedly found on the one shot down off Georgia. Unless China has invented an anti-gravity machine or some such.
Strange that these fighter pilots, supposedly well trained in identification of UFO related phenomena, differed in their descriptions of the device. And, were no photographs taken of the thing??

(24,906 posts)The question is why these photos aren't being shown to us.

(5,925 posts)And I've heard no official statement that it was a balloon, so WTH is it?? And even pilots are saying "they did not know how it was actually staying in the air cruising at that altitude. This entire balloon/UFO/spy device/anti-gravity machine is taking on a distinctly weird character. And still no word on what was found in the Atlantic wreckage.
BTW, even the Canadian Defence Minister sez she doesn't know if it was a balloon.

(5,925 posts)are possible IMO. For instance, if the Atlantic balloon is found to be benign, will it be revealed as such or will avoidance of political embarrassment be a factor? It would be easy to hide behind "national security" reasons to avoid disclosure.

(49,445 posts)Electronic counter-measures (ECM) is about jamming radars and communications.
We actually have planes that are completely dedicated to this activity. The EA-6B Prowler was one such plane the Navy used, and the Air Force used the EF-111A Raven.
They went with in a strike force and tried to jam the shit out of enemy radars and radios so the enemy was electronically blind and deaf.
Modern ships and planes also have a limited ECM ability built into their structure. This thing might have has some sort of jammer to try to prevent air traffic control radar from picking it up, or at least reduce the range at which the radars would see it.

Makes sense.

(3,347 posts)is the altitude that's being reported which is under 50k feet. They aren't equipped (that we know of) with ADSB or any other type of identification electronics like most commercial and GA aircraft are required to have by law. Anything operating under 50kft has potential to collide with civilian aircraft if it is unguided and undetected especially in any type of adverse weather. To me that's the biggest danger with these things. A 737 going 600 mph slamming into even just a balloon won't be pretty.

(13,003 posts)That anything that has been said is probably 99% bullcrap, and any REAL pictures will be shown to the public in the year 2525.............
The biggest question, that no one is thinking about asking, is:
Why did we purportedly take the *whatever it is* down by an armed missile???????? Why in the world would we quite literally blow up something we wanted to examine to see what it contained or what it didn't contain????????????? Certainly there is some way they could have brought it down slowly with less damage.......(Keep shooting holes in the balloon canopy until it slowly dropped to the earth? Neither were brought down in inhabited areas)
reACTIONary
(6,733 posts)... it would be best to shoot it down quickly. If it was not, bringing it down slowly would guarantee that it would become such a hazard and remain so for some time.

Anyway, I didn't mean slowly like days, but maybe a few hours.........Even if it came down fairly hard, it seems that that would be better than blowing it into tiny pieces, landing all over a large area.

(1,107 posts)The CCP is under a lot of pressure on a lot of fronts both domestically and internationally. This sudden uptick in events using passive technology has the feel of an exploratory expedition. Like they're looking for something they can exploit.
I'm going on 71 this summer and as long as I can remember the world has been perched on a ledge looking down at the abyss in one way or another. I've marveled that we've managed to avoid falling or being pushed off that ledge for this long.
Hope luck holds for the younger folk coming up behind us oldsters, in the last half century we sure have developed ways to f*ck things up totally for them.

(6,155 posts)It doesn't surprise me that the reports vary, as some pilots may want to be direct and upfront about it, and some pilots fear reprisal from superiors and/or other government entities.
Risky, to shoot down one of these, but maybe worth it, if they can get information from it.

(52,064 posts)Why Science Tells Us Not to Rely on Eyewitness Accounts
IN 1984 KIRK BLOODSWORTH was convicted of the rape and murder of a nine-year-old girl and sentenced to the gas chamberan outcome that rested largely on the testimony of five eyewitnesses. After Bloodsworth served nine years in prison, DNA testing proved him to be innocent. Such devastating mistakes by eyewitnesses are not rare, according to a report by the Innocence Project, an organization affiliated with the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University that uses DNA testing to exonerate those wrongfully convicted of crimes. Since the 1990s, when DNA testing was first introduced, Innocence Project researchers have reported that 73 percent of the 239 convictions overturned through DNA testing were based on eyewitness testimony. One third of these overturned cases rested on the testimony of two or more mistaken eyewitnesses. How could so many eyewitnesses be wrong?
Eyewitness identification typically involves selecting the alleged perpetrator from a police lineup, but it can also be based on police sketches and other methods. Soon after selecting a suspect, eyewitnesses are asked to make a formal statement confirming the ID and to try to recall any other details about events surrounding the crime. At the trial, which may be years later, eyewitnesses usually testify in court. Because individuals with certain psychological disorders, such as antisocial personality disorder and substance dependence, are at high risk for criminal involvement, they are also at heightened risk for false identifications by eyewitnesses.
Surveys show that most jurors place heavy weight on eyewitness testimony when deciding whether a suspect is guilty. But although eyewitness reports are sometimes accurate, jurors should not accept them uncritically because of the many factors that can bias such reports. For example, jurors tend to give more weight to the testimony of eyewitnesses who report that they are very sure about their identifications even though most studies indicate that highly confident eyewitnesses are generally only slightly more accurateand sometimes no more sothan those who are less confident. In addition to educating jurors about the uncertainties surrounding eyewitness testimony, adhering to specific rules for the process of identifying suspects can make that testimony more accurate.
Reconstructing Memories
The uncritical acceptance of eyewitness accounts may stem from a popular misconception of how memory works. Many people believe that human memory works like a video recorder: the mind records events and then, on cue, plays back an exact replica of them. On the contrary, psychologists have found that memories are reconstructed rather than played back each time we recall them. The act of remembering, says eminent memory researcher and psychologist Elizabeth F. Loftus of the University of California, Irvine, is more akin to putting puzzle pieces together than retrieving a video recording. Even questioning by a lawyer can alter the witnesss testimony because fragments of the memory may unknowingly be combined with information provided by the questioner, leading to inaccurate recall.....

(5,925 posts)is in fact one of the worst. For a good illustration, look up the beach ball/gorilla experiment and simulated police interviews in which false evidence is subtlety implanted in witnesses' recollection of an accident scene.
