The GuardianTrump, the only declared Republican candidate so far, has not yet been to Iowa.
The Yahoo News/YouGov poll gave DeSantis, the Florida governor, a 45%-41% lead over Trump head-to-head. Similar scenarios in other polls have prompted increasing attacks on DeSantis by Trump and deflections by DeSantis.

(15,311 posts)Because they are a party of uncontrollable attention seeking morons, they will have double digit people running for POTUS. So, while his "base" might be shrinking a bit, even if it is 30-40% or so, all the other candidates will wash out the other 60-70%.
Put another way.
Most of his 30 to 40% is HIS.
DeSantis' 40% or so is a lot softer, for every other candidate that comes in there he is going to lose some to that particlarly candidate.

It would be wonderful if it held because I fear DeSantis is much worse than Trump and like many, I don't think Trump can beat Biden.

(24,894 posts)He only crushed in 2016 because Bush, and Cruz didn't understand the audience and ignored Trump as the light weight he really is. The wasted time attacking each other and allowing Trump to basically skate through their confrontations. There's no way his GOP opponents will treat him the same way . . . right? Trump is easy to beat in a debate, see Biden's thorough destruction of him, and there's reason to believe most major GOP backers are going to also go in for the kill. Trump isn't the outsider anymore. He has a long track record of complete failure and his opponents speak the same MAGA language as him. Only they're smarter, younger, and out for blood. The primary will be ugly and FOX news won't have Trump's back.

(9,706 posts)If you think Bush and Cruz were bad, wait till you see DeSantis on the debate stage against Trump. DeSantis will get bullied worse than Rubio did by Christie and he'll stand there looking ignorant and impotent.

(20,659 posts)untested candidates get up on a national stage for the first time.
Remember back in 2012, when Rick Perry was projected to be the "field-killer", and run away to dominate that primary process?
