Bills safety Damar Hamlin collapses on field after making tackle against Bengals

https://www.democratandchronicle.com/story/sports/football/nfl/bills/2023/01/03/damar-hamlin-injury-buffalo-bills-safety-collapses-after-tackle-bengals-tee-higgins/69771929007/

The Buffalo Bills have suffered a lot of injuries to their secondary. Damar Hamlin's was the scariest.

The safety was injured in the first quarter of the Bills game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday Night Football.

Hamlin tackled Cincinnati wide receiver Tee Higgins, got to his feet and then crumpled to the ground. A stretcher and ambulance came onto the field as most of the Bills' roster came off the sideline to kneel or stand around Hamlin. First responders administered CPR to Hamlin on the field. Hamlin was given oxygen was he was loaded into an ambulance.

Other Bills plays could be seen crying as Hamlin was tended to by medical personnel. Other players held hands praying.

He fell to the ground at about 8:56 p.m. ESPN cut from the broadcast from the field and went to a studio about 9:08 p.m.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Game is suspended as of 6:19 Pacific Time.
I've never seen this kind of emergency response during a game. This game HAS to change.
Commotio cordis is a phenomenon in which a sudden blunt impact to the chest causes sudden death in the absence of cardiac damage. This condition was first described in the middle of the 18th century in the context of chest trauma among workers.
I would be shocked if there wasn’t an AED available and ready to use within a minute or so. That usually makes a person much more likely to survive.
Gathers was a standout college basketball player who suddenly collapsed and died during a game. Had a previously unknown heart condition. Hamlin made a hit on a player, and got back up initially like it was a routine play, which it appeared to be. But then suddenly collapsed and went back down moments later. Hope that does not mean some sort of heart condition spurred the incident, exacerbated by the intensity of the activity on the field.
Hope it's noting like that. it is clearly life threatening.
Really it could be a lot of things that could lead to the heart stopping like an aneurism, stroke, or even a conventional heart attack.
Im sure he is getting the best care possible. Good luck, Damar.
to play sports are not thorough enough to detect a weak aortic arch. Maybe they can detect a murmur, or maybe if the physician detects a minor symptom of a problem and orders more tests.
Scary stuff.
