Howie Kurtz calling NBC criticism "media partisanship" could be the height of stupidity -- or hypocrisy.
By Karoli Kuns October 17, 2022
Fox News' Howie Kurtz has his panties in a bunch over deserved criticism lobbed at NBC News over Dasha Burns swipe at John Fetterman in her interview with him last week.
Its sheer media partisanship, theres no other way to put it! Kurtz snarled. Some anchors and pundits are rushing to defend John Fetterman, who unfortunately suffered a stroke as he was winning the Democratic Senate nomination in Pennsylvania. And theyre taking aim at an NBC reporter who was just doing her job and a very good job at that.
Actually, no. She was not "just doing her job" and she certainly wasn't doing her job last week. What she was doing was taking a swipe at a man's health and recovery from a serious stroke. It wasn't the closed captioning; it was her snide little comment about how he wasn't doing so well with "small talk" ahead of the interview.

(42,761 posts)If something happens to him we do have ways of replacing senators. Its not like he has the nuclear codes. And the Republicans are getting set to reelect an 89-year-old in Iowa. Have we seen his health records? This is disgusting

(5,029 posts)Yes, its important for him to be transparent about it. But for those of us in PA the coverage has been nonstop. Every time he speaks or shows up somewhere that aspect is covered. Maybe it was of interest to her because shes not in PA except for covering him. Her emphasis on his recovery was the focus of her report; there was little else covered. Even when she interviewed Oz a few days later she discussed Fettermans recovery. Hello, does Oz have nothing to address from his own campaign.

I think the interview was humanizing. Fetterman deserves props for his transparency.
I believe the stroke recovery will make his struggles more relatable to voters (many of whom have struggles of their own, or friends, family, or love ones with health struggles) and--as Fetterman himself says--that this recovery has made him more empathetic. I believe that.
Going after reporters for doing their jobs seems bizarre to me.
What sort of "news" do we desire to have in this country??? One that only "reports" a false narrative?

(3,973 posts)My husband still watches, but after I saw that, I said, "No more". We've watched NBC for many years....I'm trying to convince him to change! Someone had to okay her doing that....it was akin to a station proudly showing a "below-the-belt" sicko Trump belittling Michael J. Fox.

(17,231 posts)His recent stroke is a life experience that will give him more insight into US healthcare from perspective of patients.
Like Roosevelts polio, perhaps this thing that seems like an obstacle to some will be a strength.
Especially since strokes are likely to be even more common in the future among the general public 52% higher in the year after a COVID infection.
