Rift in Danish royal family after Queen strips four grandchildren of royal titles

CNN — A rift has emerged in the Danish royal family following a decision by Queen Margrethe to strip four of her eight grandchildren of their royal titles in order to “future-proof” the monarchy.

The 82-year-old monarch, who this year celebrated half a century on the throne, announced on Thursday that from next year the children of her younger son, Prince Joachim, will no longer be known as prince and princess.

The reason for the move, according to an announcement from the Danish royal household, is to allow the junior royals to lead more normal lives, while it follows a similar decision by other royal families to slim down the monarchy.

The announcement explained: “The Queen’s decision is in line with similar adjustments that other royal houses have made in various ways in recent years.

Grandchildren should be treated equally by their grandparents.

If you're going to strip titles, strip them ALL, otherwise, you are inviting disaster.

It is not about family, it is business and politics.

All the housing, perks, security for royals is a very heavy tax burden.

Especially for royals who do zero work for the country, just make money by merching their titles.

The royals want to continue to exist, but unless they slim down the big families
they will be tossed off their thrones.

So they are fighting for their existence.

The direct heirs must keep the titles.

The monarchy would be committing suicide if they took the titles away from the direct heirs.
In effect they would be ending their own royal family.

3. Well, certainly MY preference would be to end the monarchy, period.

Or, strip ALL the grandchildren, and say the next generation of "rulers" is the last.

But, if they think prioritizing some of their descendants over others is a good idea....then they may inadvertently be signing the death warrant.

on edit: clarity

So they are doing what is prudent to survive.

Americans don't understand how monarchies work.

There is ONE heir, the other children will never sit on the throne.
They become irrelevant quickly.

Better they live normal lives and earn a living like the rest of the world.
Crying because they don't have a title makes them look entitled, out of touch and lazy.

Extreme inequality of status and duty were built in, and everyone always knew it.

(a good one, but!) always had foreign students from over 100 countries paying a comparative small fortune then to do their first two years there. I learned from chatting while tutoring that some students were from their nations' most important families, most very upper class at least and temporarily slumming big time. (One nice guy's how-to English essay's topic was "How to keep Americans from knowing you're better than them." A manners thing. )

Anyway, I just presumed without asking (I can have manners too ) that cousins farther up the family hierarchy, likely a lot farther, were at Harvard, Oxford, etc.

There’s a YouTube video of Dweezle taking it in to a guitar shop. That guitar has so much history.
