CBS Chicago points out that the Elkhart County Sheriff's Office originally said a maroon Buick LeSabre headed south on State Road 19 crossed the center line and hit the Toyota RAV 4 in which Walorski and two aides were heading north on Wednesday afternoon.
But the sheriff's office said Thursday morning that, based on new information, it had determined that its preliminary findings were incorrect. It said additional eyewitness and video evidence confirmed it was the RAV 4 that crossed into oncoming traffic "for reasons that are unknown at this time."...(more)

(48,089 posts)2. Article says all 4 involved had seatbelts on and airbags deployed.
I'm no expert but if all 4 were killed even with seatbelts and airbags, that seems to suggest very little braking was done. I wonder if the 2 passengers in Walorski's car were dozing and then the driver also dozed off? Maybe the driver in the other car could not avoid or was momentarily distracted by something.

until more facts are known.
There was another OP here accusing the state police of having to change their finding because witnesses came forward and told the truth even though the OP couldn't provide any sources to back up his claim
