I think the Pence family and SS guys got down the stairs less than a minute before the mob broke in. Once they got down the stairs, they had to wait hours before everyone cleared out. I'm pretty sure that was near the time when Pence finally called the National Guard in to help the Capitol police.

The secret service guys who were guarding the Pences didn't know what the other guys were doing. They weren't part of the plot, as far as any of us know.

a former security officer for the Capitol. She explained that there are layers of security that they rely on for emergency situations. One is DC police backup. But the DC police were preoccupied with the mob. The NG were not present. The DC police and the Capitol police were outnumbered by the mob.

The SS detail had no way to ensure that there was a safe pathway out for them other than radio contact with officers or other security people. The SS could not see what was happening from where they were, but they could hear the chants to hang Mike Pence. They knew that if the mob found them or saw them leaving, they would be killed in order to capture Pence.

This is where Officer Goodman came into it, leading the mob away from Pence so the SS could get him out of there.
