https://www.huffpost.com/entry/abortion-child-rape-victim_n_62d040fbe4b0e6251b3a0f79?l6gIn a truly bizarre exchange during a House Judiciary Committee hearing on Thursday, the leader of a national anti-abortion organization claimed that it would not be an abortion if a 10-year-old rape victim got pregnant and had an abortion.
Catherine Glenn Foster, the president and CEO of Americans United for Life, was responding to questions from Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) about whether she thinks a 10-year-old girl would or should choose to have a baby. After some back and forth, during which Foster refused to answer the question, she came up with a response.
I believe it would probably impact her life, and so, therefore, it would fall under any exception and would not be an abortion, said Foster.
Wait, replied Swalwell, puzzled. It would not be an abortion if a 10-year-old with her parents made the decision not to have a baby that was the result of a rape?
If a 10-year-old became pregnant as a result of rape and it was threatening her life, then thats not an abortion, Foster said. So it would not fall under any abortion restriction in our nation.

(82,849 posts)Note the list of qualifications Foster runs down: 10 year old girl; had to have been raped (as if she could have gotten pregnant any other way); and the pregnancy was threatening her life, then okay, she can get an abortion-that-we-won't-call-an-abortion.
Foster knows how this sounds to a normal human being of average sensibility, so she has to begrudgingly carve out an exception, which isn't really in the unjust law she's trying to defend. But she'll say it for the cameras so that people won't see her for the monster she is.

(54,591 posts)Their exceptions make it very difficult to prove the exception. That's the point.

(36,229 posts)In Ohio, abortions are illegal after cardiac activity is detected, which usually occurs around six weeks gestation and before many people know they're pregnant. There are no exceptions for rape or incest, which got renewed attention after a Columbus man was charged with raping a 10-year-old girl who traveled to Indiana to get an abortion. The case drew the attention of President Joe Biden and made international news.

(37,856 posts)First - allowing an exception for rape or incest would not change an abortion into not-an-abortion; it merely makes having an abortion legal.
Second - the phrases they are relying on in Dobbs for their new definition of abortion did not exist when the trigger/zombie laws were written, they are flat out wrong from a legal persepctive. Ohio's definition of abortion:
Third - it appears that the phrases they are relying on from Dobbs are from hand-picked state-specific laws.

(37,856 posts)They need to be called on it each and every time they trot it out. Have medical and legal definitinos of abortion on hand to prevent them from redefining abortion to change the narrative.
They did it with same gender marriage (if the state accepts same gender marriage, churches will be forced to marry couples against their beliefs)
They are doing it now with trans athletes (this is really a feminist issue - our precious little girls will lose out to "men" who are allowed to declare themselves women)
They are now doing it with abortion when the consequences of Dobbs became politically untenable.
(A nearly identical exchange occurred yesterday about an ectopic pregnancy, as well.)

(26,158 posts)and refusing to let the point go, following up with another witness to make sure to drive his point home. Foster was engaging in the most ludicrous and dishonest verbal gymnastics. It was disgusting, and good on him for not letting her get away with it.
