First, how many mom & pop stations still exist?
Second, it's clear, and unsurprising, that these dolts don't know what margins are.

Even the big stations that are "branded" really don't belong to the oil company or gas company. They make very little money on gas - sometimes only a few cents per gallon. Gas stations exist so that people will come in and buy overpriced soft drinks, candy bars, cigarettes, and various sundry items.

bats and dud full mechanical work. He closed the pumps abd just became an auto repair shop. The other guys made his place a really convenience store tge sold alcohol and had tge Dukin Donutes annex with a drive-thru as well as a big self storage site behind the gas station + propona tank refills if I recall. He sold it for a nice profit years back.

Dad died in 95. Mom closed it in 2000. They had to charge high prices on gas because of the price they had to pay for buying so little compared to the big chains. And, apparently, evaporation is a thing, according to the gas company.

parents are gas station owners … and they only worry about themselves and maybe family, so it’s realllly about 1 less gripe they will have against Joe, isn’t it ?

Makes more money from the garage I think.

This is pathetic even by their 'standards' (what scant few microscopic ones they might have)

It’s like they all have a case of Oppositional Defiant Disorder: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/oppositional-defiant-disorder/symptoms-causes/syc-20375831

We could cure cancer, and it would somehow be spun as a negative.

I feel like people forget that when you make shit up and lie, you pretty much have a blank canvas to say whatever. Expecting Fox to present a good-faith argument, based in reality and truth, is a (naive) fool’s errand.

The last mom & pop gas station I knew was my grandparents back in the 1980's. They ran a grocery store out in the country, grandpa did some farming and blacksmithing while my grandma also did Avon.

I got my gas mostly at the local grocery store in the city of about 50,000 starting about 1976 or so.

A good friend of mine owned one. He sold less gas and had fewer customers when prices were high. Making matters even worse, high gas prices led to less disposable income for customers to spend on the products the store actually made money on like beer, tobacco, chips, soft drinks, etc.

They make money on the attached small store and/or service garage.
They make less money when gas prices are high, because they can't tack as much profit margin above the cost to them for their gas as they can when gas is lower.

set the price he bought and sold it for. He made his money in his carry out business, pop, beer, chips, deli meats and ATM fees. He make a surprising amount of money off the ATM machine.

fear that the franchised gas stations can sell at lower prices and take over the market.

Of couse it hasn't been like that since the 1930's

Still, once an argument, always an argument...
