General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI checked the baby food section of my local CUB supermarket today.
There were gaps in the stock, primarily on spaces labeled for Similac products made by Abbott. Other brands of infant formula products were on the shelves, and didn't appear to be in short supply. There were no shortages of products targeted for "toddlers."
Of course, I have no idea what the stocking situation is at any other stores, nor whether people are skeptical about feeding a different brand of formula to their infants than what they normally do.

(150,062 posts)at that store today. It's made by Mead Johnson, not Abbott. Again, though, I don't know how typical my supermarket is of others in my general area.
I'm not suggesting that the shortage isn't real. I'm just offering one point of information from one particular store. I will say that there were no Similac formula products on the shelves there, so...

(6,991 posts)Several of my friend's grands can't find Enfamil anywhere, and friend's with Amazon Prime say that the brand their grands use for their babies is unavailable. The more expensive and organic kind of Enfamil is in stock but the price they tell me their grands would have to pay for organic Enfomil

(150,062 posts)I don't know enough about it to comment further, though.
I also know that an Abbott plant making infant formula was shut down due to some sort of contamination. As far as I know, it has not reopened. That could account for shortages of the Similac formula brands right now. I remember a recall, as well, of those products.

Announcing a shortage creates panic buying and more hoarding. Owning the libs ain't cheap.

(1,430 posts)Babies wont just drink any formula. Yes, there is hoarding, but wouldnt you? If a baby is 8 months old and you have to get to a year before introducing milk and you found 6 containers of formula, you would grab all 6 containers. Its your baby. I bought my grandson 3 containers of formula when I found them and someone said, Dont you feel guilty? Hell no. He will have 3 weeks of formula. Trump was a jerk boy to have inspections, but that Similac plant was shut down months ago. Its food for babies. It should be an all out effort.

(150,062 posts)the stock on the shelves at one supermarket. I have no doubt that it is a real shortage.
As for hoarding, that will only extend the time the shortage will be real, it seems to me.
No question that it's a real problem.

(58,785 posts)Enfamil, Similac, and Gerber are available. More varieties are available via 3-day shipping only. I have no idea what speciality formulas are or aren't available. Still, baby formula is available.
Thanks for reports from other area(s). The shortage is of course real and shocking for our country, but complaining and dancing on Republican strings are no substitute for information.

(58,785 posts)of extremist states (including all post-capitalism attempts at socialism) might, what? Remind us how fortunate we are and take this as a serious sign that "it" can happen even in our advanced, privileged nation when our systems are upset by political subversion intended to do just that?
Mr. Bill's not just pointing to a coincidence -- this unprecedented shortage is occurring during extreme national and international interruptions to very complex systems caused by Republican control of our governments. We now know they came to power with the specific intention of creating the kind of chaos and unrest that would facilitate a RW coup d'etat, including the use of pandemic disease. And food shortages.
We're still battling to keep 2016 from being the great lost battle the final outcome turned on. We shouldn't be pushing RW agitprop. Looking at our own supermarket shelves before reacting is one way of keeping feet on the ground. "My" market in Georgia is a Walmart that serves a lot of low-income people.

(24,906 posts)I would imagine it varies in different areas.
There are always unexplained shortages and outages at the supermarket during the last two years. For instance, we wanted to make Stroganoff last night so I needed to pick up some egg noodles. There was plenty of every kind of pasta you could have imagined, but six feet of empty shelf empty of every brand of egg noodles. The only ones they had were some really expensive gourmet ones. I paid 5.99 for a bag of noodles, but damn, they were good.
Several years ago the Family Birth Center at the local hospital where I volunteered was having a 20th anniversary celebration. Sort of like a street fair for kids in the parking lot. My daughter ran that department and asked if the volunteers could provide several hundred hot dogs and buns to give away to the kids. We did, and I went to all three supermarkets in town and bought every beef hot dog they had.
Probably left a lot of people scratching their heads about why there are no beef hot dogs in the stores.
