I wonder if the Right is trying to destroy John Roberts so

they can completely rule the court system?

These people are really into the long game. This the 2nd time in a short period that they embarrassed John Roberts. The first time was the use if the Shadow Court.

Maybe there were some other real disagreements.

for life is wrong and ridiculous. The way it is now the court gets stacked and is political now, and can remain that way for along time.

Granted, Roberts is trying to maintain an appearance of fairness, which must piss some wingers off. But it's just appearances.

He is there for life. The only way to get him off the court is impeachment. That will never happen. Mostly because Roberts is a stiff neck rule follower. He isn’t going to do anything impeachable.

That said, I think Roberts is a conflicted man. He has reverence for the court, yet some of his colleagues are determined to practice political hackery and that, according to reports from those covering the court, is distressing him on a visceral level.
He sees The Constitution through a right wing lens (Citizens United), yet he voted to uphold Obamacare. Then turns around and votes against marriage equality. Now he won’t get on board with overturning Roe.

Roberts is becoming unpredictable. It seems to me the crazier the other Justices behave results in pushing him to the center.
