Washington PostOver the course of 14 months, the Chinese energy conglomerate and its executives paid $4.8 million to entities controlled by Hunter Biden and his uncle, according to government records, court documents and newly disclosed bank statements, as well as emails contained on a copy of a laptop hard drive that purportedly once belonged to Hunter Biden.
The Post did not find evidence that Joe Biden personally benefited from or knew details about the transactions with CEFC, which took place after he had left the vice presidency and before he announced his intentions to run for the White House in 2020.
But the new documents which include a signed copy of a $1 million legal retainer, emails related to the wire transfers, and $3.8 million in consulting fees that are confirmed in new bank records and agreements signed by Hunter Biden illustrate the ways in which his family profited from relationships built over Joe Bidens decades in public service.

(82,849 posts)Besides, that family is out of the White House now, so the Post feels no obligation to go through the business dealings of a private citizen.

(5,961 posts)Hunter Biden had no clue his dad would become President in 2020 back in 2015/2016. As far as he knew at that time, his dad's Vice Presidency was the capstone of a long political career, and that he'd most likely ease into retirement. Ex pols have found it to be profitable to do three things: lobby, speak in public, and sit on boards. This looked like Biden's future back in 2016. Even when it became clear that Trump was not universally popular and not very competent, it was not clear that Joe Biden would be getting back into politics. That didn't become clear until 2020 when it was clear no other candidate on our party that was able to get broad traction.
Would i have preferred that Hunter Biden had made multi million dollar deals in Silicone Valley. Frankly, yes. But there is nothing illegal about doing business overseas unless you are talking about someplace like Iran or Cuba.

(44,313 posts)...maybe there's criminal liability there.
But simply doing private business in and of itself isn't criminal. Perhaps cashing in on the family name isn't the most ethical thing to do, but what's legal and what's ethical are not always one in the same.
So unless there was some effort to hide money in violation of US financial laws, so what?
