This morning I decided to buy a copy of Maus.

I heard Brianna Keilar and John Berman (on CNN) interview Art Spiegelman about his book Maus. Although I am not the biggest fan of graphic novels, I looked through the sample and found it very approachable. I am looking forward to reading it.

So this is also the thing: When I bought it this morning on Amazon it was $22.37. This evening the same book is $31.49. What is that about?

No doubt every teenager in Tennessee has been besieging Amazon to get a copy.

… in inquiries. I’ve been buying books from Amazon for over 20 years, and I think I figured it out. You should have seen what happened to the $20 RBG figurine when she died — algorithm would have kicked it up anywhere from a few pennies to a few dollars, but opportunistic vendors more than doubled the price. It’s gone down again.

I’m looking it up because I’m thinking of sending it to my grandsons, age 11 and 17. It would be great for both of them.

The first and only graphic novel to win the Pulitzer Prize, MAUS is a brutally moving work of art about a Holocaust survivor -- and the son who survives him

'The first masterpiece in comic book history' The New Yorker

Maus tells the story of Vladek Spiegelman, a Jewish survivor of Hitler's Europe, and his son, a cartoonist coming to terms with his father's story. Approaching the unspeakable through the diminutive (the Nazis are cats, the Jews mice), Vladek's harrowing story of survival is woven into the author's account of his tortured relationship with his aging father.

Against the backdrop of guilt brought by survival, they stage a normal life of small arguments and unhappy visits, studying the bloody pawprints of history and tracking its meaning for those who come next.

HAILED AS THE GREATEST GRAPHIC NOVEL OF ALL TIME, THIS COMBINED, DEFINITIVE EDITION INCLUDES MAUS I: A SURVIVOR'S TALE AND MAUS II.

Give Fables: Legends in Exile a look. I stumbled onto it because of the Wolf Among Us video game, and was immediately hooked. It's a very creative and imaginative take on our fables and fairy tales. The premise is that an unknown enemy, the Adversary, chased them all out of their ancient homelands and into our world, specifically New York City. So Old King Cole is the mayor, Bigby Wolf is the sheriff, etc.

Despite the childish source material, it's definitely an adult story and deals with adult themes, including a great deal of social commentary. Should you get the itch for another graphic novel, I highly recommend it.
