about the pride and patriotism of engaging in brutal wars. It made a big impact during the Vietnam days. Im not sure Dont Look Up will be as effective in niggling the conscience of those who dont already get it.

(57,602 posts)The bad reviews are really just proof of what the movie is saying, though, aren't they?
BUT, I do find myself thinking, "Don't look up!" a lot in response to the events of the day and the reactions to them.
I do encourage people to watch it. It really was an excellent movie with something important to say.

(14,039 posts)I just dont think it will have much of an impact to those people. Im certainly not mocking it. It has its own style.

(44,316 posts)It was dreadfully depressing despite its humor, though.

(759 posts)We have a small group (6 total, 3 couples) that has gotten together for many years every Friday evening. When COVID got bad, and before vaccines became available we switched to meeting on-line, called ourselves the Friday Night Cronies.
Now that we are vaxed and boosted we have returned to getting together physically, minus the meeting at the bar before going out for dinner. My turn to host, will put Dont Look Up on the home theater. 5 out of 6 of us will enjoy the movie. Dan, well, he will just have to bear it. Hes a die hard Republican, but I give him a pass since he never wears MAGA crap and is vaccinated and boosted.
Ive seen every episode of MASH several times. I think it did change some attitudes, war is a waste.

Sympthsical
(10,735 posts)It is preaching to the choir in the form of a passingly ok film.
It was just an ok movie - I liked the last half hour a lot more than the previous two. But if anyone thinks people on the Right are going, "Yes, this is who is going to change my mind: Meryl Streep," I don't know what universe they're living in.
It was a little bit of holiday clapter. (Clapter is when comedians spend less time constructing good jokes and more time saying things they know their audience agrees with and will generate applause).
The people thinking it's just one of the greatest movies of the year because it's so amazing and anyone who doesn't like it just doesn't understand it.
Nah. I got it. It's just ok. And a movie dripping with disdain for the people it ostensibly wants to reach isn't achieving anything but some press.
