(16,374 posts)by the mid 80s, he fucking hated them and Reagan. He even set up voter registration booths at his concerts to encourage the youth to vote against the Republicans. He wasnt a huge fan of the Dems but he viewed them as a better alternative.

(55,334 posts)At least one person in this thread said he was a registered Democrat, hated the GOP, and had libertarian tendencies (thought a flat sales tax would be better than the income tax)

(55,334 posts)Everybody is conservative about something. I'm conservative about private property; I'm conservative about the environment (I want to conserve it). What Zappa was advocating was small government, which can be a liberal or a conservative position, depending on what decade your saying it in.
Zappa's politics were libertarian. Flat tax, anti-government, anti-income tax, anti-censorship. But thing he was consistently critical of was the Replacement blican Party, especially the nosy neighbor flavored GOP of the 70s and 80s.

(16,374 posts)I was just going by what the guy above me posted. It makes more sense to me that he was a registered Dem because he hated the GOP with all his heart.

(935 posts)Not that that makes him a Republican. But he was principled in his beliefs, and not necessarily robotically aligned to either party.

(9,116 posts)If anything, Zappa was a libertarian... in a truer sense of the word than is commonly used by those who have adopted it today. A classical small "l" liberal, if you will.

The illusion of freedom will continue as long as it's profitable to continue the illusion. At the point where the illusion becomes too expensive to maintain, they will just take down the scenery, they will pull back the curtains, they will move the tables and chairs out of the way and you will see the brick wall at the back of the theater.
