New US cases fall to numbers not seen in almost a year

New coronavirus infections across the U.S. have tumbled to rates not seen in more than 11 months, sparking optimism that vaccination campaigns are stemming both severe COVID-19 cases and the spread of the virus.

Hospitalizations and deaths steadily declined last week. Hugs and unmasked crowds returned to the White House, a Mardi Gras-style parade marched through Alabama’s port city of Mobile, and states that have stuck to pandemic-related restrictions readied to drop them. The seven-day average for new cases dropped below 30,000 per day, a number not seen in 11 months. The average number of deaths over the last seven days also dropped to 552.

All the numbers have fallen dramatically since the pandemic roared to new highs in January. Still, experts warn the pandemic is not over.

“My biggest concern is new strains of the virus and the need to remain vigilant in the months ahead,” Boston College public health expert Dr. Philip J. Landrigan said.

I always look at the 7 day rolling average which is still on a sharp decline for cases and less so for deaths.

We have some of the best vaccines we have ever had. But 30% of Americans won’t take it. Way more in red areas. Less in blue areas. And we are about to totally reopen the economy, which we should.

We were told keep doing what you are doing, living half a real life till we have a vaccine. And most of us did.

And everyone wants to open things up. Vaccinated people like us because we are safe. Unvaccinated because they never wanted to shut down.

So now we will have a continuing few hundred a day dying from COVID-19. All of them the people who won’t take it. Had everyone got it, which by now pretty much all could except the kids, it would be gone.

The Northeast and much of the West will be completely past this in a few weeks. The South will be dealing with it all Summer. But eventually vaccinations will be high enough here and it will die out.

As far as variants, those will come from overseas. Not a problem yet though.
