McConnell Prepares His Exit

McConnell Prepares His Exit

"SNIP.....

“Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has compiled a short list of successors in his home state of Kentucky, preparing for the possibility that he does not serve out his full term,” Kentucky Republicans tell The Intercept.

“The list is topped by his protégé, state Attorney General Daniel Cameron, and also includes former United Nations Ambassador Kelly Craft, whose billionaire coal magnate husband is a major McConnell donor, as well as Kentucky Secretary of State Michael Adams, a former McConnell Scholar.”

“Under current law, the power to appoint McConnell’s replacement falls to Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear. But new legislation McConnell is pushing in the Kentucky General Assembly would strip the governor of that power and put it into the hands of the state GOP.”

KY state Senate: 30 R, 8 D
KY state House: 75 R, 25 D

We here in Kentucky are regressing in everything. Other states should take note of the spread of the R disease, a.k.a. stupid disease. At the very least, insist on paper ballots everywhere.

To take that power away from him entirely would require a constitutional change -which would go to the voters. Of course, they could easily dramatically narrow the the candidates he can appoint, which appears to be the goal.

"“Under current law, the power to appoint McConnell’s replacement falls to Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear. But new legislation McConnell is pushing in the Kentucky General Assembly would strip the governor of that power and put it into the hands of the state GOP.”

I would hope some really smart Democrats could find a way to quell Mcconnell's power and keep the status quo. He has gotten away with way to much for far too long.

The fight went out of Mitch after it had become obvious that Biden had won. I also have to wonder if at some point Biden and McConnell had a long talk on the phone after McConnell lost the speakership about whether the Turtle would go quietly or whether the threat of an investigation would be necessary, especially as Jan 6 may have rattled him a lot more than he let on.

I wouldn't be surprised if Mitch tries to outwait Gov. Beshear's term, thinking Beshear won't be elected again--same reason, the Gen Assembly has been trying to do him in from Day 1.

They are a scurvy bunch. Have already tried to strip Beshear of Covid powers, and plotted to have him recalled. They just can't stand that he's a damn good governor. Our vaccination rate in this state sits at 25% now.
