Former White House counsel to Richard Nixon, John Dean, took to Twitter Sunday evening to speculate that the one behind the now-infamous extortion tape of Donald Trump may have been the president or one of his staff.
Dean noted that the audio of the recording made Trump sound the loudest and the clearest. That indicates that the person recording it is the clearer one. He also said that it sounds almost as if the others on the call are on a speakerphone, which would make sense if Trump or his staff was recording it near the president's phone.
If Trump was the one behind the call, it begs the question of whether other calls he makes are recorded. How many of them were recorded? With whom? And why they haven't been released by the president who pledged full transparency.

If one man knows about White House tape recordings, its my esteemed friend Mr. Dean.
His conclusion: the recording was made AT TRUMPS END OF THE CONVERSATION.

(8,730 posts)The only source I can find about the recording's provenance so far is the New York Times write-up (my bold):
As expected, that attack came in a tweet on Sunday morning, in which Mr. Trump claimed that Mr. Raffensperger was unwilling, or unable, to answer questions such as the ballots under table scam, ballot destruction, out of state voters, dead voters, and more. He has no clue!
In a response on Twitter, Mr. Raffensperger wrote: Respectfully, President Trump: What youre saying is not true. The truth will come out. The recording of the call was made public several hours later.

(26,637 posts)It prompted historian Michael Beschloss to ask how many other examples there are of calls like this from Trump to Republican officeholders.
"As reporters, we have documented many similar 'orders' Trump has handed down...instructing John Kelly to give Jared Kushner a security clearance, demanding Don McGahn help him shut down the Russia probe, etc," tweeted Washington Post reporter Carol Leonnig, agreeing with Beschloss.
I think Beschloss and Dean are on to something...............

(8,730 posts)There have definitely been other calls between Trump and Republican officeholders in this context. Only the other day he was on a Zoom call with, IIRC, four states' representatives to discuss the issues. That's beside the point Dean was trying to make.
I can't see anything that Dean's (and Obermann's) theory adds to what seems a clear narrative: the GA officials taped the call, which doesn't seem unreasonable, and decided to release the recording when Trump went on the attack and lied about what was discussed. Trump's a would-be Machiavelli, but when it comes down to it, he's a crap, flailing strategist, not a mastermind.

(26,637 posts)he has been know to ask for quid pro quo on a lot things, and he is trying to do it now.
I really would not put it past him to blackmail anyone, this just shows how far he has taken this country down and for all of those concerned people that thought he learned his lesson and all those people that are going to pull there shenanigan's this coming Wednesday, should resign or not be seated.
We are now in serious national security grounds here and what he is doing is absolutely dangerous and his enablers are dangerous.
The only thing I have is my vote and it is a vote to protect this democracy, he should have been be censured yesterday in my opinion , since the Impeachment process failed ....my

(12,953 posts)but then there was another announcement with it, that explained that Trump had lied on twitter, included Trump's tweet and that was why the audio was released.

(166 posts)I believe I read somewhere that every call to and from the White House is recorded.Security purposes. I have also read that tRump has a penchant for both video and audio recordings .Any lawsuits he files seems to me to be to just more bluff and bluster, HE would be incriminating himself...

@BeschlossDC is right:
What about all the ones we *don't* know about?

(27,328 posts)...suing the SoS afterward would do nothing to overturn the election.
If Deans observations are correct, Id theorize someone on the staff or national intelligence put a tap on Trumps own phone, and leaked it to stop him.

(15,760 posts)The voice loudness seems weak, since trump always has to out-loud everybody else anyway. OTOH, trump probably thinks he did a great job on the call, so maybe he did record/release it. Maybe everybody recorded it & released it. P.S.: i just read Raffensperger said he recorded/released it.

(24,906 posts)trying to kick Trump's paranoia up a notch by making him think he was betrayed by someone close to him.
I don't like Dean, but I think he is clever enough to do something like this.
