Ohio officer who fatally shot unarmed Black man relieved of duty for not turning on body camera

A police officer in Columbus, Ohio, who fatally shot an unarmed Black man while responding to a noise complaint early Tuesday was relieved of his duties and is under investigation for not turning on his body camera in the city’s second deadly police shooting of a Black man this month.

Weeks after 23-year-old Casey C. Goodson Jr. was killed by police while entering his home, a 47-year-old man was holding a cellphone inside a friend’s garage when he was fatally shot in an incident that went unrecorded by the officer until after the shooting. The victim and officer have yet to be publicly identified.

Hours after ordering the city’s police chief to fire the officer on Tuesday, Columbus Mayor Andrew J. Ginther (D) announced the officer had been suspended for the “unacceptable” action of not turning on the body camera before the fatal shooting, which is being investigated by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

“Our community is exhausted,” Ginther said in a news conference.

1. If I had my way his prosecutor would be relieved of need to prove guilt.

Cops should be assumed guilty of whatever they appear to be guilty of in cases where they turned off their cameras. Then they'd be motivated to make sure their actions are recorded.

Airing of the evidence before a duly-empaneled jury, right to cross-examine, access to all discovery, competent legal counsel, and then, after a full and fair trial, a guilty verdict that fails to be overturned on appeal. At that point, imposition of the harshest available sentence so that nobody can say he was unfairly convicted or railroaded by a mob mentality. A demonstration of how the system is supposed to work, even for someone that some people might say doesn't deserve such consideration.

I'm shocked they didn't plant a gun or drugs on him before anyone else was there to witness.

A white grey haired neighbor called the cops because the sound of some black guy's car was a disturbance? Uh huh. Fucking snowflakes. Excuse me get over it. Black people exist in your precious world.

Or the black man reached for his waistband.

Why does that waistband seem to always turn up empty? Is there an epidemic of itchy waistband?

12. Update: Body camera footage shows Ohio cop shot Black man within seconds of encounter

The Columbus Police Department on Wednesday released the body camera footage of the fatal shooting of a 47-year-old Black man in which an officer shot the victim within seconds of the encounter.

Footage of the encounter published by WOSU Public Media shows the officer, identified as Adam Coy, shoot Andre Maurice Hill early Tuesday morning.

The incident comes weeks after a local county sheriff's deputy, Jason Meade, fatally shot 23-year-old Casey Goodson Jr., whose death sparked protests across the city.

The Columbus Department of Public Safety said Tuesday that Coy's body camera was not fully activated, meaning there's no audio for the first 60 seconds of the encounter.
