Something is seriously wrong with our democracy that these elected leaders, who know better, are ...

This is my reaction too—shaken, but also angry.

It's *not* because #SCOTUS is going to indulge this nonsense (it isn't); it's because so many Republicans who purport to care about federalism and the rule of law are so gleefully participating in cynical, anti-democratic behavior.

That they care so little for democracy

We must all stay hyper focused from now on. Give, volunteer work to get GOTV ...even if the only slated election is for county dog catcher

Olbermann also made this point in his latest video.

Trump is going to be the cult of personality prophet for the base until the day he drops dead, maybe after too.

These people are magical thinkers, ignorant and many unstable.

We have had regular if sporadic christofascist terrorist attacks for decades.

They aren't going lesser, they are going to worsen. Hopefully most of these nutjobs are cowards and don't blow up federal buildings and the like.

Won't be long before they drag out "the horrors of the national debt" to justify obstructing Biden. Never let the public forget it was the GOP that inflicted Trump and Pandemic slaughter on this country.

7. I am not shaken or surprised, this is what Trump's 2016 success meant.

Once he became the front runner in the primary, the signal was clear. A significant portion of the Republican base are authoritarian followers and the authoritarian leaders in the GOP will be empowered. Winning the primary and then the election only meant that their inevitable grab for full power moved that much closer. Today is the day for that power grab, which they will lose, but they will try again. They can't help themselves, it's in their nature.

I tried to warn people who thought Trump was a joke and a sideshow and posed no real threat that he was a danger and you never let someone like him get one election away from power - because anything could happen that could allow him to slip in. And that's just what happened.

Updating Authoritarian Nightmare, Bob Altemeyer October 8, 2020

We're not out of the woods for this election until Jan, 20, 2021 & then we just bought ourselves some time.

America’s Next Authoritarian Will Be Much More Competent
Trump was ineffective and easily beaten. A future strongman won’t be.

Make no mistake: The attempt to harness Trumpism—without Trump, but with calculated, refined, and smarter political talent—is coming. And it won’t be easy to make the next Trumpist a one-term president.

At the moment, the Democratic Party risks celebrating Trump’s loss and moving on—an acute danger, especially because many of its constituencies, the ones that drove Trump’s loss, are understandably tired. A political nap for a few years probably looks appealing to many who opposed Trump, but the real message of this election is not that Trump lost and Democrats triumphed. It’s that a weak and untalented politician lost, while the rest of his party has completely entrenched its power over every other branch of government: the perfect setup for a talented right-wing populist to sweep into office in 2024. And make no mistake: They’re all thinking about it.

That’s the real unadulterated prospect of the next Republican administration. And you can bet it will have the first initial of T on it.
