I've been debating with myself about where and when to vote this year. I had planned on voting absentee and mailing in my ballot because of the dangers of covid. Then I changed my mind and decided to battle the crowds and vote in person on Nov 3 just to make sure that my vote was counted on Nov 3 to make sure Biden's totals look good as soon as possible (prevent any Red Mirage). But is voting absentee in person just as safe and can I be sure that my vote will show up in the totals on election day? BTW, this is in Wisconsin.
What are your plans to vote this year?

(11,306 posts)don't see any reason to stop now. Anyway, I already dropped off my ballot: it's been received and verified.

(47,327 posts)It worked just fine. However, if you don't have absentee ballot, that's cutting it awfully close for you to now request one. Although apparently Wisconsin allows you to vote absentee in person. Frankly I feel that if one can, one should vote early.

(31,261 posts)If it is moving slow, voting by mail is a mistake this late in the cycle. I voted by mail in late September and my ballot was counted during the first week of October. I had planned to vote early in person, but the mailin ballot arrived so quickly after being sent to me that I did not want to wait more than 20 days to early vote in person.
Check with your county to see whether you can take your mailin ballot into the registrars office and turn it in there. Otherwise, if you want your vote surely counted on Election Day, then you will need to wear PPE and vote in person.
On edit. If you have not requested a mailin ballot yet, my feeling is that you have waited too long to vote by mail.

Wisconsin is one of the "slow counting" states. They are prohibited from counting any votes until Nov 3.

(31,261 posts)The question that you have to answer is do you want your state to be in the undetermined column on election night, with Trump claiming that he has won it?

(47,327 posts)I prefer to vote in person but voted by mail because of a pandemic.
It worked just fine, I got it quickly and it was received quickly after I mailed it. My ballot is already accepted.

So, I'm good.
My big kids (two nominally adult sons, at 18 and 19) are going to vote in person, partially because it is their first time in a presidential election and they want to go and do it and partly because they talked me into making lasagna for them, if they come home to do it.

(3,643 posts)We voted and mailed in our ballots. In the past, we've done early in-person voting which worked well also.

(14,565 posts)The USPS concerns are understandable but I know the odds. The likelihood of a specific ballot not arriving is next to nothing. I mailed October 6th and it arrived on October 8th.
However, I was very careful with my signature and all the particulars of the mail ballot. Rejection due to those aspects is more likely than not arriving via the mail.

(3,716 posts)All steps in the process are verified by text message. I know FOR SURE that the elections office has received my mailed ballot, verified the signature, and prepared it for counting on November 3rd.
My postman (Tom) is a dedicated Trump Conservative. I know this because we have regular conversations on my front porch. We are respectful toward each other's views, and challenge each other using logic and reason. The man gifted me an expensive textbook on Socratic Logic so I would have a better understanding of the nature of "Truth" from a new perspective.
I handed him my ballot trusting that it would find it's way to the Elections Office. I received that confirmation the next day.
VOTE BY MAIL IS SIMPLE, RELIABLE, and FAIR!
There is NO REASON people should be required to stand in line for hours to exercise their voting rights!

(25,358 posts)too risky. The covid numbers are growing and who knows if you will be too sick to vote.
