Chyron earlier on Rachel's show: Trump says 85% of mask wearers get Covid-19.

Are those Trump's exact words? I refuse to watch that slob and haven't seen it mentioned here.

3. I think it refers to a study that show people that got COVID self reported that number.

And 85% of them self reported to wear mask all the time. I've seen posts talking about it yesterday.

7. No. It's a study about if they wear mask before they got COVID.

Mask, unless it's N-95, doesn't prevent you from getting COVID droplet. It mostly prevents you from flying your own droplet over the air. So mask is only as useful as the person who doesn't wear it. If everyone does, their own droplets wouldn't get in the air and it would prevent other people from getting COVID.

10. That runs counter to a very large study that showed that mask wearers

get a smaller dose of SARS-COV-2 if they are in the presence of an infected person. So their outcomes, if they get sick are better than non mask wearers. In fact, the authors of the study concluded that mask wearing may be an effective way to softly reach herd immunity from SARS-COV-2, without the death that we are seeing now. The study has been expanded and is ongoing, given it’s implications.

13. One important point is that it's self reported.

And it doesn't say how they got COVID. If you have a relative with COVID at home, you are not going to be wearing mask all day at home but you would be when you are outside. So you would say you wear mask always but you still got COVID. And the study doesn't say how severe their COVID is, it's merely the fact that they self identify as wearing mask.

Also, even if cloth mask protects you from getting heavy viral load and keeps you from a severe COVID case, they still say they wear mask but got COVID in that study.

I think that study is very misleading and surely the right/Trump is using it to say mask is useless when it isn't.

12. They asked people who already had covid if they wore masks.

85% claimed they always or regularly wore masks. But nobody wears masks 100 % of the time. You have to eat and sleep, and so on. Many of these infected people had a relative infected with covid. So if that relative is living in the same household, or they visit that relative, I doubt they always wore masks at their home or relative's home. Basically Trump completely misrepresented the study.

14. No No No No No it was a study about people who HAVE COVID and mask wearing

This was a survey of people who HAVE BEEN DIAGNOSED and if they wear masks now. It also found that spread is very often within a household (no masks) which we knew and the higher likelihood of contracting it by eating in a restaurant.

4. There was a CDC study of people who had COVID.

In that study, something like 70% of the people who had COVID said they "always" wear masks. So, Trump can't really be that stupid, he has to be lying - and yes, he said that.

The study was about the behavior of people before they caught COVID, and not specifically about mask-wearing.

6. I think those were his exact words, but he might have said 85% of mask wearers get the virus.

But he definitely said that 85% of people who wear masks get the virus. The first time he said it I couldn't believe he said it but then he said it again. I did not watch the whole thing, I kind of just jumped ahead a lot just to see how he was handling himself. I don't know why they gave him breaks.

A Republican speciality

85% (I think) of people who got Covid claim to have worn always worn a mask when near others outside their household.

Note that that's the other way around for saying 85% of mask wearers get Covid.

Still, it's like saying 100% of Indy 500 drivers who died in crashes wore seat belts so seat belts are useless.

People need to just wear their damn masks.

we should have 85 million Covid cases per day.

I saw this a couple of days ago and wasn’t sure it would get much traction. Of course it did - the non-mask crowd will latch on to anything at this point.

If 85% or those who contract Covid wear masks, that does NOT mean the 85% of those who wear masks get Covid.

It was an utterly dumbass claim on the face of it but of course that would not stop Trump from making it.
