Ron DeSantis calls Florida 'God's waiting room' for dying seniors at coronavirus press conference

Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) referred to his state as a “waiting room” for seniors who will soon die.

The Florida governor made the remarks at a coronavirus briefing on Sunday after noting that some nursing home patients had been infected by asymptomatic COVID-19 carriers.

“Florida is ground zero for the nursing home, we’re God’s waiting room,” he explained. “We have a huge number of facilities, a huge number of residents.”

DeSantis went on to brag that the state has “only 1.2” coronavirus deaths per 100,000 nursing home residents.

My Mom and Dad were thinking about buying a place in Florida when I was a kid. That would have been in the mid-to-late 50s, and every real estate agent they talked to would say, "Oh, don't buy in _______ (insert name of town), that's God's waiting room". That meant that it wasn't suitable for a family with young children.

When I went to buy a place in 2001 real estate agents were still using the same hackneyed joke. That being said, I don't think it's appropriate for the Governor of Florida to say that about many of it's residents. Florida would be still be a festering swamp without the countless millions of retired people who settled there throughout the decades.

...he's just reciting them. I believe the statistic he wants to quote is per 1,000, not 100,000. I also believe that Florida is under-reporting coronavirus related deaths. A closer approximation of the actual toll will probably have to wait for the release and analysis of excess mortality statistics.

But the "God's waiting room" is old news meant to gin up outrage. Warm weather is more pleasant to die in as long as you are air conditioned indoors. I'm old and in New England and winters suck. Florida is affordable and available and I don't doubt for a minute that if I lived full time in Florida I would resent the shit out of old assholes (similar to myself, but with a bit more cash) moving in and using up state resources if I was working in the summer heat to support my family while they styled in over 55 parks and overtaxed medical resources, so I might very well be resentful. Ain't nobody moving up "North of the Notches" (upstate New Hampshire) for their golden years. And the inverse is not true.
